More or less the final Irish competition of the season.
The Ninjas are a duo again, Paddywack is still recovering from his Hernia Operation and Groin Strain. He is still very quiet as to how he got both injuries in the same area of his anatomy, but we will get to the bottom of it! No pun intended!! :)
Entries are as follows:
John - Singles, Mixed with Ashleigh & Doubles with John Amond
Ashleigh - Singles, Mixed with John & Doubles with Michelle McCourt.

Victor Leinster Open Championships 2011 - Terenure BC - 22-01-2011
The badminton is over. Well....not entirely true, it is over for myself and Bashleigh! Hehe. We didn't make the semis this weekend, and if I was to qualify that, Ashleigh didn't make the semis in the one event she could enter this time and I didn't make the semis again! Haha
The first game played between us was my first round mixed with Claire Flood against Brian Dignam and Laura Hennessy. I started off slowly, we were losing 11-8 at the first interval, we gained momentum and started to attack the shuttle a lot more, and under Claire's guidance we won the first set 21-19, the second set was a blow-for-blow affair, but Brian and Laura triumphed in that 21-19 with the jammiest of net court clips from Brian to win the set, although the 4 of us did have a good laugh about it!! Haha
As the 3rd set started I acclaimed to Claire that we were going to command this set and we certainly did, we turned 11-4 up at the interval, going on to lead 15-5 and eventually winning 21-13, it was a great way to win the game :)
Our second game and quarter-final match was against the No.1 seeds Danial Magee and Fiona Glennon, we were up against it in this match. But this time I didn't let anything phase me. I was determined to show what we could do. The first set ended up being quite a close affair, again both sides trading blows, eventually Daniel and Fiona won out 21-16, but in the second set Claire and I got off to a slow start and couldn't peg enough points back to worry our opponents, losing 21-11 in the end. Although a two set loss on paper, it was certainly hard-fought and a lot of good points to be taken out of it.
A big thank you to Claire for playing the mixed event with me, they were great matches and a lot was learned throughout.
Ashleigh then made her appearance after her College Commitments (yes, still an oxymoron :) ). Ashleigh ended up playing with Siobhan Grehan, as Michelle McCourt was sick for the occasion. Siobhan and Ashleigh played Aoife Lennon and Ciara Pender. So, not that I'd want to rub it in, but Ashleigh and Siobhan actually lost the first set, a tired and dismal display as Ashleigh would agree which they lost 21-19. Ashleigh then regained her composure and with a self-initiated metaphorical kick up the ass went on to rattle the next two sets out to win 21-13 & 21-13. A well deserved victory, although I think Ashleigh knew she'd be walking home if they didn't win!! :)
Ashleigh's next match was again against the No. 1 seeds of Jennie King & Sinead Chambers. This was a tough draw, although a good match to play. Jannie & Sinead play a very tight game, and eventually won out 21-11, 21-12, although Ashleigh and Siobhan put up a brave fight but found the lack of tiredness in Jennie and Sinead a turn-off in the end :p Again, Ashleigh made another Quarter-Final, no wonder she has been called up to train with the Leinster U-23 Squad :)
I was next with my Men's Doubles match, I played with Seamus Halpin and our first round match was against two gentlemen from Claire Flood's Uno Academy in Kilcullen, Alan Anderson & Gareth Hogan. Myself and Seamus got off to a great start in the first set and I was determined to hold the advantage of serve and we went on to win the first 21-5. The second was a different affair, maybe due to stupid thoughts of easiness or just lack of concentration, at one point it was 11 all, but both myself and Seamus knew we had to knuckle down, and we did, eventually winning 21-13. A great game with two great opponents.
Our last-16 match was against Philip Collins & Colm Kelly, two players whom I had not come across before. The first set was a battle for us from the start, although coming back from 16-10 down to level at 16 all, we couldn't force the win in the set and we lost 21-17. The second was a tougher affair, Philip & Colm had the measure of us and we could not get into it, eventually losing 21-11. A good game, plenty to think about :)
So, onwards and upwards to the Irish Nationals in Lisburn on the 5th of February :)
As an addition, it was brought to my attention (Ashleigh) that I neglected to mention my singles event! Or should I say my one singles game. Haha. I played Ruaraidh Sim on the Friday night, it was a very enjoyable game, I lost 21-10, 21-6 but thought I actually played well. I am putting down the score to the lack of coaching form my games-coach, you know who you are!! Only kiddin' ;)

The draw is up for the Victor Leinster Championships 2001 to be held in Whitehall Road.
The Ninjas are depleted for this tournament. Paddy has aggravated his pulled woo-woo, Ashleigh is only able to play the Ladies Doubles do to college commitments (yes that is an oxymoron!!), and Aoife was given her P45 after the Sligo Senior Open.
I am left to play the singles, first (and last) round opponent is Ruaraidh Sim, to be played Friday the 21st at 9pm. Mixed doubles is in the air at the moment, waiting to hear whether I can get a partner to enter. Men's doubles again is with the Ninja Seamus Halpin, first round match against Alan Anderson & Gareth Hogan from Claire Flood's Uno Badminton Academy in Kilcullen, that match is at 12.55pm.
Ashleigh is playing with Michelle McCourt, their first opponents are Aoife Lennon (don't know her ;) ) and Ciara Pender (good player), that match is on at 1 o'clock ish, when Ashleigh's commitments ease for the day :)

Ulster Junior Open 2011
The Ulster Junior Open 2011 - Lisburn - 8th January 2011
Players:
John Cassidy - Singles, Mixed with Ashleigh, Men's doubles with John Amond
Ashleigh Coyne - Singles, mixed with John, ladies Doubles with Michelle McCourt
Paddy O'Connell - Injured - Sore Woo-Woo.
Where do I start, as the eternal optimist let's start with my games, then go onto the good ones, they would be the 2/3rds of the competitions that Ashleigh entered!! Hehe
I started with the singles against John Amond, I lost the first to a pitiful 10, regained some composure and breath to eventually scrape the second 16 and then go 11-6 into the lead at the change of the 3rd, even getting the first two points to go into a commanding 13-6 lead. My command was a bit like Hitler's success, short lived and never came to fruition :) I lost the 3rd set 21-15, a lot to learn in that game!! ;)
I then played the men's doubles with my partner for the day, Mr. John Amond, isn't irony a great thing!! Haha We played against Justin Ho and William Gourley, we battled hard but went down in 2, 15 & 17. I felt disappointed in the 2nd set as we turned 11-10 up and led 16-14 at one point. I think I got stage fright and started making silly mistakes where I should have been more relaxed and not trying so hard to win, I should be waiting for the part of the rally where the opposition loses it! :)
Then the mixed. Oops, what an experience. We were seeded 3/4, yes I know, the seeding was all thanks to my partner, Ashleigh :) We played my nemesis for the day, Mr. Juston Ho :) and pam Peard. Now this pairing really do have their game down to a tee. We were outplayed by a different form of mixed doubles to anything we had encountered before, that was a true learning experience for both I and Ashleigh, notwithstanding that, we actually played very well in stages :) We lost in two sets 17 & 18 as per Tournement Software ;) Hehe Ashleigh knows what that "Hehe" is for :)
Now, onto better pastures :)
Ashleigh played the singles, first round opponent was one Ms. Rebecca Getty whom had got the better of Ashleigh the previous time they met in the Ulster Seniors, ironically enough. Ashleigh was determined to reverse the result and through determination and hard work she did! She lost the first set in her own customary way to 11 ( Yes, 11, Can you believe that). Myself and Mark Topping came on to talk to her at the break and give her the metaphorical kick up the ass that she required! It seemed to work, Ashleigh won the 2nd set to 18, it was a tight one though, so another metaphorical kick at the interval was required, this one certainly worked, Ashleigh ran out a 21-10 winner of the last.
Onto the semi-final for Ashleigh where she met a formidable opponent in the petite shape of Ms. Laura Butler, the No. 2 seed. I can honestly say Ashleigh wasn't confident, actually if I'm honest, arsed would be the correct word to use, in this match!! Haha She lost in two, 7 in the first, but an admirable 14 in the second, having let 11-8 at the interval.
Then onto the Ladies doubles, where Ashleigh played with Michelle McCourt. In their first match they played Sarah kerr & Susan Stephenson. A war of attrition ensued, Ashleigh and Michelle winning the hard fought first set 22-20, then losing the run of themselves in the second, losing it to 10 and then getting a kick in the ass from eachother to win the 3rd set 22-20, with Ashleigh letting out a large shriek of joyous self congratulations in the process.
Onto the quarter-finals where Ashleigh and Michell met Claire Flood & Sorcha O'Loughlin. Starting from their again customary slow blocks, Ashleigh and Michelle only won the first set 22-20, but then went into 2nd gear and won the second set to 10, onto the semis!! :)
In the semi final they met the Orr sisters, Hannah and Rachel, the No. 2 seeds. And yes, it could be seen quite easily as to why they were the No. 2 seeds. Although Ashleigh and Michelle did not give in without a fight, and fight they did. They ended up going down 21-14 & 21-16, a brave effort against a pairing that wenton to lift the trophy :)
All-in-all a great day's badminton for Ashleigh, a day that she should be proud of. It truly shows that hard work and dedication will pay off in the end :)

Christmas Adult Bonanza Div 2 - Thursday 30th Dec 2010
What a day of Badminton! :)
In the Men's DoublesI played with Alan from UNO Badminton Academy, we drew our first 3 matches 1-1, losing the first set in all 3 and winning the second convincingly, a lesson to be learned there! We lost the final match 2-0. Great games and a pleasure to play with such a gentleman.
In the mixed doubles, myself and Ashleigh won our first 4 games to get through to the final, we started off slowly, in the first match, winning 21-19 in the first set, but then got into a groove winning 12 in the second. Our second game was more convincing winning 12 and 15, good game. We continued in the final two games winning in two sets to go straight through to the final, and actually being the only pairing not to drop a set!
We played Sylyia Campion & Willie "Jose" Stephenson in the final, a mental battle was in store!! :)
We started well in the first set, trading blows throughout and shaded it 23-21 (Amended) :) We then slipped to a bad start in the second, at one stage trailing 11-4, we went on to lose that set 21-19, a war of attrition.
The 3rd set did not start (or finish) well for us, we lost control early and trailed 12-2. We gained some momentum although couldn't get close enough to threaten, eventually losing 21-13. But all-in-all a wonderful match, and food for thought!
A big thank you to Willie & Sylvia for a wonderful match!
Ashleigh played the Ladies Doubles with Susan Stephenson, and duly went on to win their section, individual match scores are a blur. Sensational badminton in sued :p, and in between the fits of laughter, giggles and flowery shots :) the final was theirs! A great day for Ashleigh!
Overall a great day, my hat goes off to the organisers and hope it is run every year. It was a great way to start working off the Chrimbo turkey!! :)
Up next is the Ulster Junior Open on January 8th, Paddy is still injured, I will get the pleasure of playing with Ashleigh again, Onwards and Upwards!!
